Conference

We had a venue for intellectual discussion to establish Seoul as an improved
human-centered urban environment

We aim to continue taking the lead
in strengthening the competitiveness
of urban design by declaring “Human
City Seoul: as a Human-centened city.”

The Sustainable Human City Design Conference looks at our city from the perspective of a “stage of ordinary life.” Big and small happiness of everyday life comes from the system surrounding our lives. It is the design that determines the realistic details of the system. When we live in an environment completed with good design and sometimes can participate in the design process, everyday in our urban life has a richer and more diverse color. The Human City Design Conference shared stories of the city’s design environment with its citizens and listened to the current issues and success stories of each city from design experts and scholars who aim for wise design.
The Sustainable Human City Design Conference was attended by researchers from 9 of the 11 European Human Cities Network cities. Among UNESCO Creative Cities Network in Asia, people from eight cities of the Design field and three cities of the Crafts and Folk Art field visited Seoul.
Although history, culture, size and economic conditions are different, the problems 22 cities are struggling to address are all alike. On the second day of the conference, urban design experts presented the most troubling problems and examples of creative design to deal with the problems. There were a variety of interesting discussions about upcycling, crafts and sustainability, which are important keywords of the 21st century. The examples of each city that adopts various problem-solving methods based on its own special situations and cultural characteristics inspired us who dream of a Human City.
