    Accessible Beaches

“ A project that helps the disabled and the elderly in wheelchairs use the beach easily “

About 8% of the population in Muğla, a beautiful tourist city with Turkey's longest coastline, is disabled.

The project began with the request of the Muğla city’s Disability Organization and the Accessible Muğla Platform to allow people

with disabilities to access the beach in a wheelchair.

Since 2016, this project has installed floating decks made of specially designed materials on the sandy beaches

and seas of 19 beaches in 7 districts so that wheelchairs can enter the sea, and not only the beach but also the surrounding roads,

toilets and all facilities, including shower rooms and changing rooms, are designed to be barrier-free so that people

with disabilities can use them conveniently.

The detachable deck can be easily installed and removed, allowing the beach space to be used in

various ways depending on the season.

The project extends beyond the city of Muğla to other Turkish municipalities and sets an example of

how disabled people, caregivers and tourists can be equal on the beach.
