About Project

Fuzhou Trans-Urban Connector is a 19-kilometer elevated forest walkway that spans the entire length of Jinniushan, a mountain in the middle of Fuzhou, China, and is based on a completely novel, innovative system.

It is part of an urban connector network that increases citizens’ access to Fuzhou’s natural monuments and a realization of the concept of “slow travel.” Amid the ever-changing urban environment, the walkway provides a space for relaxation while leading citizens to the forest’s various ecological/cultural resources. Above all, it gives everyone, regardless of social class, the opportunity to enjoy a view of the city from an elevated point. It has increased citizens’ quality of life by reorganizing the relationship between nature and urban residents.

To revive Jinnuishan’s social and natural functions after having been abandoned for many years, a cemetery and quarry were repurposed into a visitors’ center. A bus stop was also installed along with convenience facilities at each of the walkway’s 10 entrances.

The walkway is made up of six basic deck components that form an all-terrain modular system, which effectively navigates the undulating topography of the mountain while allowing barrier-free access along its entire length.

The modular entry system and high-efficiency steel construction enabled flexible responses that caused no harm to the natural surroundings and allowed a significant section of the existing greenery to be saved. The floor of the walkway was made with porous steel grating so that natural light can penetrate into the forest, thereby promoting plant growth.

This project showed a graceful combination of good function, beautiful aesthetics, and eco-friendly landscape.
